Wood storks (Mycteria americana), which love to wade through southeastern swamps and wetlands, are very good fliers. So while it is a very rare bird for New York City, one wood stork did manage to ride the thermals to Staten Island and show up on July 31, 2021, near Matrix Global Logistics Park.

The Filming the Feathers video shows the wood stork on August 1, 2021, along with a feisty little snowy egret, who wasn't quite sure what to think of this visitor. This video shows the striking contrast in size and movement. Wood storks eat fish and crustaceans, although this video doesn't show much activity except a wing stretch and opening and closing the beak.
