A Late-Summer Floral Bouquet
The end of summer has provided such great photos of the beautiful flowers in Riverside Park and Central Park. This photo gallery features flowers photographed from August 28 to September 10, 2021.
So Many Happy Sunflowers
In summer 2021, I got to spend time photographing sunflowers near Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens and at the community garden in Riverside Park in Manhattan. Usually I walk north on Cross Bay Boulevard from the train station at Noel to the wildlife refuge. Along the west side of the boulevard, a woman has planted an exquisite garden, which this summer featured some stunning sunflowers. And at the Riverside Park garden, one of the gardeners used his space for these sun worshippers. I have found that some of the most gorgeous paintings I’ve seen, especially by Vincent van Gogh and Emil Nolde, not to mention the amazing artist Judith Bush, feature sunflowers, and whenever I get a chance to photograph these flowers (often showing the flowers within the flowers), I think of those paintings.
The sunflowers in this slide show were seen at the Cross Bay Boulevard garden in Queens on August 14 and at the Riverside Park community garden on August 28.
Summer 2021 has so far proved to be very, very hot. At the same time, there have been some beautiful floral sightings all over New York City. I am especially fond of flowers that bear my name, so there may be quite a number of blue-eyed Susans in my offerings here. (You tell me they are called black-eyed Susans? Fooey on you.)
These flowers, both wild and cultivated, were seen in New York City, Long Island and Westchester in summer 2021.
