Miracles in Miniature

I love the ruby-throated hummingbirds who visit Central Park in the fall, feasting on the jewelweed and cardinal flowers. They are miraculous birds, eastern America's sole breeding hummingbird. They breed from Canada south into Florida and eastern Texas, and migrate from Canada to Central America. They are so fast, flitting here and there, and are a photographer's joy and frustration. In 2021 I was able to photograph some of these ruby-throated hummingbirds in the Oven and at Shakespeare Garden in Central Park, trying out my new camera. I'm still working on my technique. A cool fact from the Cornell Web site: "The Ruby-throated Hummingbird beats its wings about 53 times a second.”

The other hummingbird I’ve been able to photograph is the black-chinned hummingbird, which I saw in Arizona in 2016.
