Monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus) took up residence at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, reportedly in the 1960s when, as legend has it, a crate of parakeets escaped at JFK Airport. They began their nest on the spires near the main gate, and now flourish there. Other monk parakeet nests have popped up in various locations in New York City (I remember a nest in Riverside Park near 72nd Street years ago), but the Green-Wood residents are the most famous. And they love to chatter, which always welcomes me when I visit Green-Wood.
The monk parakeets in the gallery below were seen in 2024 at Green-Wood Cemetery, April 7 and April 19.
