A great crested flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus) was flying around Nolan Park on Governors Island, New York City, on May 6, 2019. These insect-eating birds often fly high in the canopy, so I was fortunate this one posed for a short video.

The great crested flycatcher is the only Eastern flycatcher that nests in cavities, so they can be lured into nest boxes! The Filming the Feathers video is very short, and features music by Henry Purcell: A Thousand Ways We’ll Find from The Fairy Queen, Z.629, arranged for recorders and performed by Papalin.

The photos below were all taken May 6, 2019, on Governors Island.
