Just east of the Staten Island Ferry terminal in Manhattan you'll find the Governors Island Ferry terminal. The ride takes you to a magnificent island just a 10 minute ride away, with some amazing wildlife. Governors Island is being commercialized more and more each time I visit, but it's still a nice break from the city. You can't drive there, but you can bring your bicycle or rent a bike. I love eating at Little Eva's, too!

A September Walk on Governors Island

A trip to Governors Island on September 18, 2020, aimed for migratory warblers, but ended up with Blooms, Birds, Bugs and Bratwurst. The blog has a wide variety of photos, but I post a kestrel here, plus two shots of Lower Manhattan and the BMW bridges from the Governors Island ferry.

On Aug. 6, 2017, I made a visit and filmed some of the birds, flowers and butterflies I saw there.

The highlight of any trip is a visit to the nest of the yellow-crowned night herons. I was able to photograph some of the kids.

There were also young gulls on Aug. 6, plus parental supervision.

Lots of flowers and butterflies!

I also saw a banded common tern on Aug. 6, and a group of least sandpipers.
