Evening grosbeaks (Coccothraustes vespertinus) are rare visitors to New York City. When a male visited Riverside Park in December 2018 and stayed for about a month, many birder pilgrimages recorded his activities, which consisted mainly of pulling berries and seeds off trees and eating a lot.

The Filming the Feathers video was shot over six days: December 30 and 31, 2018, and January 25, 26, 27, and 28, 2019, in Riverside Park, near Grant’s Tomb. It is set to music by Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni, Concerto for 2 Oboes, Op. 9, No. 3, performed by Advent Chamber Orchestra and obtained from MusOpen.org, a royalty-free music source. I am very grateful to Elizabeth Paredes for helping me find this bird and guiding my camera. Without her help, I’d have no footage or photos!

These photographs were taken on December 30, 2018, and January 26 and 28, 2019, in Riverside Park.
