Eurasian eagle owls (Bubo bubo) are not native to North America, and the two I have seen were captive birds. I generally do not designate pages to captive birds, but since Flaco escaped into Central Park, I thought the species deserved a separate page.

Augie is an Eurasian eagle owl who was raised by Bobby Horvath of Wildlife In Need Of Rescue or Rehabilitation (WINORR), and I have seen him several times at the Raptoramas and Raptor Fests in various park in New York City. The second one I have seen was first at the Central Park Zoo, just next door to the exit of the penguin house. In early 2023 some idiot cut through his cage and Flaco escaped into Central Park. At first he really had trouble finding food, but by the end of February he had managed to make his way to the North Woods, where he has been hunting. (You can see photos of Augie on the Raptoramas and Raptor Fests page. Unfortunately, Flaco did not survive and died on February 23, 2024.

The photos of Flaco in this slide show were taken in early 2023.
