I haven’t had the opportunity to see all that many common nighthawks (Chordeiles minor), but when I do, they are generally asleep or resting on a branch and look like feathered lumps. But I was so happy to see a feathered lump on May 31, 2021, at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens without the help of another birder! (I knew I had spotted a nightjar, but wasn’t sure which one until Merlin and other really good birders assured me the bird was a common nighthawk.)
