Clapper rails (Rallus crepitans) are some of the most elusive birds to photograph. They love hanging out in deep reeds and grasses in marshes, and usually can be heard much more easily than they can be seen. These omnivores probe the ground with their long beaks, and I usually hear them near areas where I see lots of fiddler crabs. Clapper rails have special salt glands that they use to drink sea water.
